Beta-alanine helps to increase muscular strength, power output, aerobic endurance, and overall exercise capacity.
It can be used effectively on its own, or as part of a basic killer pre-workout mix with citrulline malate and AAKG. Add a stimulant like caffeine to the mix for a serious training edge.
Studies also suggest that beta-alanine and creatine enhance each other’s benefits when used together.
HOW IT WORKS
During high intensity exercise your body accumulates large amounts of hydrogen ions. These put the body in a more acidic state. The hydrogen ion buildup in the body is also what causes lactic acid buildup. Both of these affect the capacity of your muscles to contract. Something called carnosine can act as a buffer for the hydrogen ions, preventing the acidic escalation and allowing for longer muscular exertion before feeling the dreaded ‘burn’ and fatigue.
One can’t effectively elevate your carnosine levels by taking carnosine though, because it gets destroyed during the digestive process. This is where supplementation with beta-alanine offers a useful workaround: Beta-alanine is the limiting amino acid in the production of carnosine and is decently absorbed by the body, and by taking it you help your body to make more of its own carnosine.
Extra information for the curious mind:
|Beta-Alanine and Muscular Endurance||During high intensity exercise our body starts to accumulate large amounts of hydrogen ions. This causes the body to take a more acidic state. The hydrogen ion build-up in the body is also what causes lactic acid build-up3. Both of these affect the ability of the muscles to contract to their full potential. When Carnosine is present it acts as a buffer for the hydrogen ions. This means that it prevents acidic build up which allows for longer muscular exertion before feeling the burning sensation and fatigue4.|
|Beta-Alanine and Carnosine||As stated in the previous point Carnosine is responsible for acting as a buffer for the hydrogen ions that build up. Supplementing with Carnosine is not beneficial as most of the carnosine is destroyed in the gastrointestinal tract. This is where supplementation with Beta-Alanine comes in. Beta-Alanine is the limiting amino acid in the production of Carnosine. In basic terms the more beta-alanine that is present in the human body the more carnosine can be produced by the body and thus you are able to exercise for longer5.|
|Beta-Alanine and Creatine||Beta-Alanine and creatine taken together seems to have a synergistic (improve the effect of each other) effect when taken together. According to a study done and published on PubMed they tested the effect of Beta-Alanine and Creatine taken together, only taking Creatine or being part of a Placebo Group. What they found was the greatest change in lean body mass and percentage body occurred in the group of athletes that supplemented with both creatine and beta-alanine. They also appeared to have greater strength improvements6. See footnote for the link to the study.|
